# R&D experiment record

Copy this page for each experiment cycle. Write sections 1 to 5 before the work starts and leave them as written. Add to sections 6 and 7 as the work happens, under dated headings. If your expectation changes, add a dated entry explaining why rather than editing the original.

## 1. The problem

What technical or scientific problem are you trying to solve, and how do you know it is a problem? Include the measurement that shows it (for example a latency, an error rate, a yield or a failure mode).

## 2. What you checked first

Which published methods, papers, patents, vendor documentation, open source projects or experts did you consult, and what did each show? Why did none of them tell you the answer in advance?

| Source | What it covered | Why it did not settle the question |
| --- | --- | --- |
| | | |

## 3. Hypothesis

State what you expect to happen and why, specifically enough that a result could prove it wrong.

- We expect that:
- Because:
- It would be disproved if:

## 4. Experiment design

How will you test the hypothesis? Describe the setup, the variables you will change, what you will hold constant, the measurements you will take and the sample or test data.

## 5. How you will evaluate the results

What result counts as success, partial success or failure? Which metrics, thresholds or comparisons will you use?

## 6. Log (add as you go)

### YYYY-MM-DD

What was run, what was observed, and the data or artefacts produced (link them).

### YYYY-MM-DD

## 7. Conclusion

- Did the hypothesis hold? Why or why not?
- What did you learn that you did not know before?
- What happens next (a new hypothesis, a change of approach, or the end of the activity)?
